Sustainability
Environmental sustainability
"After all, sustainability means running the global environment - Earth Inc. - like a corporation: with depreciation, amortization and maintenance accounts. In other words, keeping the asset whole, rather than undermining your natural capital." Maurice Strong (First Director General of UNEP)
The bond that exists between economic development, social responsibility and respect for the environment is at the very foundation of the concept of sustainability.
The positive results achieved in environmental matters during recent years confirm the validity of the direction taken by Finmeccanica, through its subsidiary Finmeccanica Group Real Estate (FGRE, the company that manages the Groups real estate).
The continuing involvement and spreading awareness of the importance of environmental questions within the Group’s companies translates into constant, structured and visible improvements in environmental performance, generating concrete economic and social benefits.
By monitoring our behaviour and our environmental impact we have once again been able to achieve important results in 2010: reduction in water drawings, consumption of dangerous substances, waste production and an increase in the amount of waste sent for recycling. The attention given to sustainable use of resources also results in the implementation of actions and solutions at management level, such as obtaining ISO 14001 certification, which has now been achieved by over one third of all sites in the accounting perimeter.
It is thanks to this approach that Finmeccanica is constantly moving in a direction that leads from compliance to performance. We must no longer be content to comply with laws and regulations, but must go beyond them, in search of virtuous forms of behaviour, involving all the Group’s EHS (Environment, Health and Safety) managers and raising the awareness of all the human resources in our companies.
So that sustainability will become, day after day, an integral part of the corporate culture and an essential factor throughout the value generation chain.
