Metro Campania Nord-est - Ansaldo STS | |
The project to modernise the former Italian Alifana e Benevento-Napoli
railway-now MetroCampania NordEst - has as a fundamental condition: its
integration with the above-ground systems and with line 1 of the Naples
underground. It constitutes an important branch of the railway system in the
metropolitan area of Naples, which services a densely-populated area
(approximately 166,000 residents).
In the short term, the new regional underground will connect the centre of
Aversa with the city of Naples.
The realisation of this suburban system falls within a larger project to
upgrade and enhance the territory, which unites transportation and
architectural infrastructures for a contemporary city.
To date, the Piscinola-Scampia-Mugnano section of the new
Napoli-Giugliano-Aversa line is operational. This underground section is
approximately 3.2 km long.
During the first operational phase, a transportation capacity of 7,800 people
per hour will be ensured, with a run frequency of 15 minutes and a 5-minute
journey. Once it is running regularly, the entire Piscinola-Aversa section
will transport 22 million people per year.
Each station is enriched with works of art by contemporary artists.
This system is configured like an underground.
MetroCampania NordEst will connect all the cities in the province of Caserta
(S. M. Capua Vetere, Teverola, Aversa) with the centre of Naples, and will
serve the towns of Giugliano, Melito, Mugnano, Piscinola and the airport of
Capodichino.
The area between the stations of Piscinola and Capodichino will be a common
section with the line 1 ring of the Naples underground.
The signalling and automation system will use state-of-the-art technology
(centralised computer equipment managed by a single central station), and as a
result will ensure:
elevated vehicle performance in complete safety;
observance of the timetable;
reliability and availability.
In 2007, the line will arrive at Aversa with the stations of Melito,
Giugliano, Aversa Ippodromo and Aversa Centro (in a second phase, the line
will proceed towards Teverola up to Santa Maria Capua Vetere).
In 2008, it will reach Capodichino.
Therefore, by 2010-2012, with the completion of line 1 and the MetroCampania
NordEst line, there will be a single large railway system connecting Naples,
the communities to the north of provincial capital and the area surrounding
Caserta.
