The Automatic Driverless Metro System in Copenhagen

Print
The automatic metro system in Copenhagen provides fast direct service between Copenhagen City, Frederiksberg, the north of Amager and the new city of Ørestad. In addition, it connects Vanløse and the Copenhagen Airport.

The Copenhagen metro system has received two awards: in 2008, it was named the "best metro in the world" and in 2009 "the best driverless metro in the world".

The Ansaldo STS contract includes the following:
  • Vehicles
  • Automatic train control (ATC)
  • Distribution of alternating current (medium and low voltage)
  • Distribution of direct current for train traction
  • Supervision, control and acquisition of data (SCADA)
  • Communications system
  • Railway superstructures
  • Object detection system
  • Platform door system
  • Metro control and maintenance centre (CMC): civil works, supply and installation of maintenance shop equipment.
Ansaldo STS will also carry out the operation and maintenance of the metro for a period of 8 years from the time it begins service, recently extended until 2015.

Ansaldo STS will apply the driverless metro technology used in Copenhagen, completely automatic and without onboard personnel, also for the metros of Rome Line C, Milan Line 5, Brescia, Thessaloniki, Taipei Circular line and Riyadh women's university.

The technology

The communications system provides voice and data communication to the central control operator and also gives passengers information on the arrival time in every station, the location of the train, safety information and emergency services.
The Control and Maintenance Centre (CMC) operator can communicate with the passengers on board a specific train, the police, maintenance and fire control personnel and can see what happens on board every train in real time and in every station.
Innovation and safety make it possible for the Copenhagen metro system to be included among the most advanced and modern metro systems built in the world.
