Mars Express is the European scientific probe to study the atmosphere of Mars and map the geology of its surface.
 
Thales Alenia Space was responsible for the integration and testing of the satellite and built the MARSIS instrument capable of detecting the presence of water up to a depth of over 5 km beneath the surface.
