Environmental Report 2005

The Environmental, Health and Safety department of Mecfin S.p.A., now Finmeccanica Group Services S.p.A., has compiled the first Environmental Report for the Finmeccanica Group relating to environmental data for the year 2005.

The report is based on about 30,500 items of data from 93 sites involving 25 companies in the Group, located in eight countries on four continents. Collecting, archiving and computing the data was carried out by a specific program created for the purpose by the Environment, Health and Safety department.

The first Environmental Report for the Finmeccanica Group was verified and certified on August 4, 2006, by ERM Certification & Verification Services (ERM CVS).

The Environmental Policy and the first Environmental Report constitute an organic and programmed overview of the Finmeccanica Group regarding prevention of pollution, protection of the environment and safeguarding natural resources.

The Environmental Report is an expression of the attention Finmeccanica gives to environmental protection in addition to being an effective instrument for communicating with stakeholders and an aid to increasing the overall value of the company.

The Environmental Report is also an instrument of risk handling and management of activities in terms of environmental effectiveness and efficiency. Just as the economic and financial balance gives an account of the management of capital and resources, the Environmental Report informs those concerned with managing the environment, by means of key survey parameters, regarding company-environment relations.

The evolution of the market, shareholders' concern with the object of their investments, and the attention customers give to the reliability of their suppliers, are elements that can influence production policy and have produced a different concept of the value of a company. It is no longer possible to confine the evaluation of a company solely to the economic and financial variable, since this now includes aspects and risks of an environmental nature.

The first Environmental Report opens a new era in environmental management by the Finmeccanica Group. The principles of environmental protection will be integrated with the activities of the companies in the Group beginning with the process and product planning phase and during the lifecycle of industrial sites where these activities take place. This approach, which integrates scientific knowledge, technical skill and management abilities, gives a stimulus to eco-efficiency within the logic of environmental sustainability.
